"The book begins with the first colonization of the Americas and stretches beyond the Revolution to the early national period. Placing the literary culture of the settlements in the context of other colonies as well as the growing cosmopolitan culture of the British empire itself, this lively reader contains numerous dialogues across the English Atlantic world. American Literature has been regarded since its inception as the preeminent periodical in its field. Each issue contains articles covering the works of several American authors—from colonial to contemporary—as well as an extensive book review section; a “Brief Mention” section offering citations of new editions and reprints, collections, anthologies, and other professional books; and.
Our American Literature reading list was compiled from two sources: our history program Exploring America from Notgrass and also American Lit program from Excellence in last two years we have used the literature guides from Excellence in Literature and love the format of the program, but we also wanted to intertwine some of the recommended novels from the Notgrass . The regular American Literature Research Seminar brings scholars and critics from across the world to the RAI to present groundbreaking and influential work. Recent and scheduled speakers include Sarah Rivett (Princeton), Elisa Tamarkin (Berkeley), Jonathan Elmer (Indiana), Cindy Weinstein (Cal Tech), Fiona Green (Cambridge), Shirley Samuels.
This book serves as the general framework for Sonlight's American Literature course. Rather than choosing a book from each of the major periods ("Pre-Colonial," "Transcendentalism," etc.), and working in chronological order, instead, this course uses my favorite books by American authors and allows Adler's instruction to help read these.
